Home / School News / River Runner Weekly – Sept. 22

Good afternoon, River Runner families, I hope you have enjoyed a fulfilling Friday.  As I sit here on one of the last Friday afternoons of September, I can’t help but feel very impressed with our progress thus far into this young school year.

Today was definitely a highlight for most of our River Runners large and small, as it was our annual Terry Fox celebration here at Saseenos Elementary.  Thank you to those families able to send in a twoonie over the past couple of days, as we were able to raise well over $200 for the Terry Fox Foundation—monies that will be passed on to the Terry Fox crew in short time.  To honour this important day we congregated as a whole school for an assembly and an accompanying run to carry the Terry legacy forward.  I was completed impressed with the knowledge, empathy and understanding demonstrated by our River Runners throughout our gathering and Terry festivities.  What a great way to end our week!  Please do ask your little one for their thoughts on all that is Terry Fox-related, as this is a very knowledgeable bunch!

We have another very important date upcoming on the calendar—National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.  This impactful date occupies Saturday, September 30 on our calendars, but will be a focus throughout the next week here at Saseenos.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day for all Canadians to commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system. It’s a day to honour the resilience, dignity and strength of survivors and intergenerational survivors and remember the children who never came home. It’s a chance to engage and educate people about B.C.’s colonial history and how it has and continues to impact Indigenous communities.

Here at Saseenos we honour this day over the course of 5 school days, essentially equating to an ‘Orange Week’ of sorts, culminating with the widely renowned ‘Orange Shirt Day’ next Friday, September 29.  Please encourage your little one(s) to wear their orange throughout the week—tshirts, hoodies, jackets, hats, socks, headbands or anything orange!  We will be facilitating many educationally rich conversations within our classrooms, and highlighting the importance of this very important piece of understanding.  Thank you for your help with this!

Thank you to those families able to join us for our Open House last night.  This was a well-attended event, and one that only highlighted the warm and loving culture here at Saseenos.  I feel so very fortunate to be a member of this amazing little community, and left for home from the evening with a smile firmly planted on my very face.  Thank you for your support of all that is Saseenos-related.

As some of you may be aware, we are now operating a daily lunch program here at Saseenos.  This is being funded and facilitated by the Flourish!  Food Society and the amazing Matthew Kemshaw.  We are provided with warm and health food for approximately 20 little ones each and every day moving forward.  This program is being offered at close to 20 schools within our district, add is such a vital addition to the Saseenos repertoire.  The intention is to feed any hungry little ones on a daily basis, with the priority being for any families in need of assistance.  The food is being provided in a stigma-free manner, and has been so well-received thus far.  If you feel that your little one, and family, would benefit from this program, please reach out to me directly.  We just want to make sure that we are servicing our school community to the best of our ability.  If you have any questions and/or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.
